The first step to preparing pre-shave oil at home is knowing the key ingredients used in the preparation.

Most pre shave oil formulations include Olive Oil and Castor Oil, and there is a strong reason behind this. Here’s a look at the qualities of different key ingredients used for making pre-shave oil:

  • Olive Oil- This oil has been in use for several centuries to provide skin care. The reason behind this is the presence of squalene, a natural hydrocarbon compound that smoothen and hydrates the skin. Olive oil also contains anti-oxidants which help slow down aging.

  • Castor Oil- This oil contains naturally occuring undecylenic acid, which works to fight against germs and prevent burning, itchiness, and irritations. It can also effectively tame ingrown hairs, acne, and various other sensitivities because of its cleansing properties. Castor oil is essentially very slick and thick to touch, which makes it an ideal barrier for the facial skin before shaving. But if you use castor oil singly you will find it very difficult and heavy to apply. That’s why castor oil is mixed with other oils in order to obtain its maximum health benefits.

  • Vitamin E Oil- This oil is used for nourishing the skin, and it can fight against free radicals while making the skin appear youthful. Vitamin E oil is also a natural preservative which can extend your pre-shave oil’s shelf life.

  • Essential Oils- The use of essential oils in various DIY products is very common, as they offer fragrance along with various other qualities. Most essential oils are chosen for their abilities to nourish the skin, fight germs, promote regeneration of skin, rebuild skin elasticity and balance the production of oil.
