You can create your own shaving oil at the comforts of your home

Shaving oils come in a variety. There is one that you apply on your skin and one for your beard. The oil you lay on your skin is a pre-shave oil, making the whiskers or hair softer for an easier and less painful shave. Meanwhile, you use beard oil after trimming to maintain the softness and manageability of your beard.

However, there are other benefits of using pre-shave oil, which will be discussed in the article below, and a simple DIY homemade shaving oil recipe that you can make at home.

As much as possible, apply a pre-shave oil to prep your skin before shaving.

How Pre-Shave Oil Benefits You

Since a pre-shave oil works as a carrier oil, other natural oils or compounds are usually added to help clarify, tighten, and brighten your facial skin, making it youthful and wrinkle-free.

Pre-shave oils are a great addition to your shaving routine because it also moisturizes the skin deeply, ensuring a closer shave while preventing irritation and ingrown hairs. It can also contribute towards skin exfoliation, as it can essentially eliminate dead cells of the skin, leaving the skin supple and smooth to the touch.

Here are some major benefits of using pre-shave oil:

  • Facilitates closer shave
  • Builds a barrier that protects the skin from the effects of the razor, preventing over-exfoliation and irritation
  • Lowers friction and softens the facial hair
  • Ensures smoother and better glide
  • Effectively moisturizes the facial skin, ensuring a smoother shaving experience without cuts or nicks that occur due to dehydrated, dry skin
  • Prevents the chances of irritation or ingrown hairs
  • Provides benefits from the essential oils and other special oils used in making the pre-shave oil
  • Provides nourishment to the skin, making it smooth as well as supple after shaving.

Types Of Oils For Making Shaving Oil

There are currently 90 essential oils known to man. Yet, not all of them are suitable for your skin. Some can even impose harmful effects, especially if you have sensitive skin or allergic reactions to certain plants and foods.

Not to mention, these oils have varying levels of viscosity and solubility. Some oils are thicker and harder to mix in with the others. Meanwhile, some do well with others, making them easily blend in.

So how do you know which oil to use when making your shaving oil recipe? Check out the guide below:

Carrier Oils

The very base of your pre-shave oil is carrier oil. If we are talking about ratio, carrier oils make up 95% of your pre-shave oil. It does not exude much aroma, and it has a thin viscosity. Hence, they are not impressive on their own, even if they have unique benefits to offer.

These are the most common carrier oil used for shaving oils:

⚫ Olive Oil

One of the most traded commodities of today is olive oil. You can literally find it everywhere. If you plan to recreate a DIY shaving oil recipe at home, chances are you already have this ingredient on hand. How convenient is that?

Olive oil is an excellent carrier oil. It is thin and does not have an overpowering aroma, yet it is packed with benefits. Famous philosopher Hippocrates even coined olive oil as “the great healer,” helping him treat at least 60 ailments during his time.

This oil has been in use for several centuries to provide skincare. The reason behind this is the presence of squalene, a natural hydrocarbon compound that smoothens and hydrates the skin. Olive oil also contains antioxidants that help slow down aging.

Despite having a lot of beneficial properties, olive oil is not good to be applied on its own topically as a pre-shave oil. Your skin cannot easily absorb it, making it difficult for you to enjoy its benefits. But, it can be a great moisturizer on its own.

Olive oil helps prep your skin and minimize skin irritation.

⚫ Coconut Oil

Every country has a popular remedy. And for those in humid and tropical areas, coconut oil is the most renowned old wives’ solution for skincare and beyond. It is highly moisturizing and great for killing bacterias and inflammation.

Although coconut oil is 100% fat, do not let that fact turn you away from its acclaimed benefits. This tropical essence is rich in lauric acid that has superb antimicrobial properties that help fight bacteria on the skin. Besides, its ability to nourish the skin and lock in moisture makes it the perfect moisturizing carrier oil for shaving oils or balms.

If you will use this for your own homemade shaving oil, opt for the fractionated coconut oil. Using the pure version will eventually turn solid, especially in lower temperatures. On the other hand, fractionated coconut oil does not solidify since the fats responsible for that have been distilled, making it easier for your skin to absorb and prevent clogged pores.

Coconut oil is used in shampoo and conditioner since it is great for hair and the skin underneath.

⚫ Castor Oil

There is no other oil that has been industrialized as much as castor oil. You can find it in your soaps, lotions, shaving oils, and even in the lubricants and diesel you use for your car. Some of the paint on your house also has castor oil in them.

But is it harmful? Why is the oil that has multiple skin benefits found in industrial products? The fact is, castor oil is rich in ricinoleic acid, making it a valuable additive to extend the shelf-life of products in the chemical industry. But we are not here to talk about that.

This oil contains naturally occurring undecylenic acid, which works to fight against germs and prevent burning, itchiness, and irritations. It can also effectively tame ingrown hairs, acne, and various other sensitivities because of its cleansing properties.

Castor oil is essentially very slick and thick to touch, making it an ideal barrier for the facial skin before shaving. But if you use castor oil singly, you will find it very difficult and heavy to apply. That’s why castor oil is mixed with other oils to obtain its maximum health benefits.

Castor oil is ideal for moisturizing the skin and keeping it free from dryness.

⚫ Hemp Oil

Cannabis has come a long way from a highly controversial plant into a superfood. After state laws became more lenient and paved the way for the legalization of the food-grade cannabis strain, hemp, there has been a significant increase in hemp-infused products.

Hemp oil is trendy in the skincare industry today. For men, there are a lot of pre-shave oils with hemp oil for the base. Hemp oil is ideal for shaving products because of its ability to moisturize the skin without triggering your skin’s natural oil production. Instead, it balances it out, preventing clogged pores and skin problems.

Aside from that, hemp oil is rich in omega-3 and omega-6, which are essential fatty acids that promote skin elasticity, and healthy shiny hair. If you partner that with its antioxidant properties thanks to Vitamin E and its non-comedogenic properties, then you will have a nourishing, anti-aging, anti-inflammatory shaving oil that will not clog your pores.

and thick.

⚫ Jojoba Oil

If you are looking for a unique component for your homemade shaving oil, then use jojoba oil as your base. Unlike other oils, jojoba is actually not an oil. It is technically a wax ester that has properties similar to the sebum your skin naturally produces.

Its sebum-like properties allow it to manage your skin’s oil production. Applying it to your face lets it add more moisture to the areas in need without adding much to those that are already well-saturated.

And like the other oils above, it is rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and anti-inflammatory properties, making it another perfect ingredient when you are finding ways on how to make shaving oil personally.

You might be wondering if it is even necessary to use a carrier oil. Why not simply put the essential oil directly on your skin? We also wish it can be that simple. But some essential oils have properties that can do your skin more harm than good if you were to apply them as is. Hence, we advise that you dilute essential and vitamin oils in a carrier oil before use.

Jojoba oil contains vitamins and minerals that prevent hair loss and promote
hair thickness.

Essential Oils

The use of essential oils in various DIY products is very common, as they offer fragrance along with different other qualities. Most essential oils are chosen for their abilities to nourish the skin, fight germs, promote skin regeneration, rebuild skin elasticity and balance the production of oil.

Vitamin Oils (Vitamin E)

This oil is used for nourishing the skin, and it can fight against free radicals while making the skin appear youthful. Vitamin E oil is also a natural preservative, which can extend your pre-shave oil’s shelf life.

Pre-shave oil moisturizes the skin deeply, ensuring a closer shave while preventing irritation and ingrown hairs. Using pre-shave oil can also contribute towards skin exfoliation, as it can easily eliminate dead cells of the skin, leaving the skin supple and smooth to touch.

DIY Homemade Shaving Oil Recipe

When preparing your shaving oil recipe at home, you need to make sure that the ingredients used in making the oil should possess the following qualities:

  • Antiseptic/antibacterial
  • Anti-aging
  • Easy absorption
  • Skin repair
  • Lowering of irritation
  • Fragrance

The ingredients play a crucial role in providing added nourishment for the skin in your pre-shave oil. This is why you need to carefully choose the oils you will use and understand their healing properties before you get started with your DIY project.

DIY Pre-Shave Oil Ingredients

The first step to preparing pre-shave oil at home is knowing the key ingredients used in the preparation.

You will need the three basic oil components first, which are:

  • Carrier Oil
  • Vitamin E Oil
  • Essential Oils

Aside from that, you will also need the following:

  • Amber Glass Bottle
You can easily buy a dozen of these bottles online and offline. This bottle generally comes in 1oz size, making it ideal for preparing and storing pre-shave oil. Also, the bottle’s color protects the pre-shave oil from light and external heat. You can also use the dropper in this bottle for easy application.
  • Essential Oil Pipette
You can purchase these pipettes from any store or buy them online. You need to ensure that the oils don’t get mixed, which is why all the oils should be provided with a separate pipette.

Amber glass bottles help protect the integrity of the substance placed inside, while pipettes make the application easier.

How To Prepare DIY Pre-Shave Oil?

So, now we can get started with the preparation, which is a straightforward process. You need to collect all your ingredients first. These include:

  • Olive Oil (superior quality, if possible organic) - 1 fluid ounce
  • Castor Oil (should be 100 percent pure) - 2.5 to 3 fluid ounce
  • Vitamin E Oil (pure) – 5 drops
  • Essential Oils (should be skin-safe) - 15 drops
  • Pipette – for measurement (use one pipette for each oil)
  • Amber glass bottle - as many as you need

Preparation Method:

  • Step 1 - Use the pipettes to pour all the ingredients into your amber bottle.
  • Step 2 - Next, seal the bottle tightly and then start swirling it around gently so that the oils mix properly inside the bottle.
  • Step 3 - Your DIY Pre-shave Oil is ready for use.

Directions for Usage:

  1. You need to apply only a few drops of the pre-shave oil onto your hands, and then gently spread this oil on the area you will shave.
  2. Never start with a lot of oil; if you feel that you need more oil, you can add it accordingly.
  3. Allow the pre-shave oil to rest on the facial skin for at least 1 minute. It will help soften the facial hair. You can use this time to wash off the oil from your hands and start preparing for the shave.
  4. Next, apply your shaving lather or cream with the oil still on your facial skin.
  5. Shave the way you usually do.
  6. Rinse your skin and pat dry it. You can also apply your preferred aftershave if you choose to.

Applying the shave oil on your hands first lets you control how much you'd like to put on your face

Precautions for Pre-shave Products

  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS or SLES)
  • Propylene glycol
